Zuzana Bočkayová Bruncková’s work is different at first glance, easily recognizable thanks to her expressive and at the same time, in her own way, tender artistic language. Its originality and authenticity is guaranteed at first glance by the contradictory combination of harmonious colouring, expressive painterly handwriting together with bold shape stylisation and even deformation leading to the border of the acceptable.

The artist creates her fabulous compositions with a baroque sense of shape, light and space. She depicts the key situations of the story up close, often from bizarre, unexpected angles and changing perspectives, through which she draws the reader into the action, creating a kind of unease, but at the same time heightening the intensity of the experience.

Characters, animals, plants and things deliberately fill and dominate the entire space of the surface, giving the impression of wanting to transcend it and expand into our real world… An important expressive component of her expression is the unrepeatable, harmonious, at times even delicate colouring, together with her acknowledged painterly handwriting.

As it is customary in the case of quality book titles, Zuzana Bočkayová – Bruncková’s illustrations become an equal partner of the text, they live their own life, they complete what has been hinted at. With ease and a great deal of feeling and intuition, the author reveals and then visualizes the atmosphere of the books and the stories themselves.

She modifies her artistic expression very freely and non-violently, adapting it to changing themes, time periods and authors. Even with the unquestionable artistic complexity of his illustrations, he respects the possibilities of children’s perception. In a relatively short period of time, his work has shaped and co-created the visual language of contemporary children’s literature.
