One of the world’s most famous musicals of all time. Alain Boublil – Claude-Michel Schönberg

The story of Jean Valjean, a fugitive galley-boy, is based on the cult novel “Les Misérables” (1862) by the French classic Victor Hugo, and has found an absolutely adequate treatment in a stage musical. Its plot masterfully intertwines the stories of the protagonist Jean Valjean, his tireless pursuer, the police commissioner Javert, the little orphan Cosette who finds a home and later her love in the student Marius, the degenerate comic pair of tavern owners the Thénardiers, who will survive any political regime. All this against the backdrop of an explosive time, the summer of 1830 in Paris, when the barricades of the Revolution go up, in which many of the heroes of this story also take part.

After 39 years since its premiere in Paris, the musical BEDÁRI by the French authors Alain Boublil (libretto) and Claude-Michel Schőnberg (music) is now being translated by Ján Štrasser for Slovak audiences. Directed and musically supervised by Marie Zamora, Titusz Tóbisz plays the main character of Jean Valjean, the role of Javert is played in alternation by Lukáš Vlček and Jiří Daniel, the role of Marius is played by Peter Makranský, Cosette is alternated by Alžbeta Bartošová and Michaela Baladová Danielová, Thénardier is played by Katarína Hasprová and Marta Potančoková, Thénardier is alternated by Jaroslav Rusnák and Igor Šimeg, the character of Fantine is played by Veronika Prášil Gidová.

A spectacular scenic fresco in which crowd scenes alternate with intimate ones, love with hate and struggle with hope for a better world. The title Bedári is also demanding in terms of set design (by set designer Petr Hloušek), the number of props and over two hundred costumes designed by costume designer Ľudmila Várossová. The 35 performers and the 25-member Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra are supplemented by dozens of technicians, lighting and sound technicians, wardrobe and make-up artists, whisperers and backstage inspiration. Thus, 100 people are involved in the running of the performance.

The musical BEDARS had its world premiere in 1980 at the Palais des Sports in Paris, the English version of the musical was first performed at the Barbican Theatre in London in 1985 and two years later on Broadway. It is the world’s most famous and longest-running stage musical, with more than 160 international awards to its credit, including 8 Tony Awards.

Produced by London’s greatest musical impresario Cameron Mackintosh, the original London production has been continuously performed in London’s West End theatre district since 1985 and has run for over 13,000 performances. In January 2010, Les Misérables made its first trillion pounds at the London box office and to this day every performance of Les Misérables is a sell-out, making it the Guinness Book of World Records as the greatest musical theatre success. The musical has now been seen by over 70 million people, performed in 52 countries, in over 400 cities and in 22 different languages (e.g. English, French, but also Czech, Hungarian, Mauritian Creole, Finnish, Danish, Hebrew, Estonian, Spanish and Korean) and has broken all records for musical theatre productions.
