At Mariánské Square in the historic center of Prague stands a building that has been one of the city’s most important cultural centers for nearly a hundred years – the Prague Municipal Library, Central Branch.
It was built between 1925 and 1928 according to the design of architect František Roith, a student of the famous Otto Wagner. From the very beginning, it was conceived not only as a library but also as a venue for exhibitions, lectures, and concerts, preserving its multifunctional role to this day.
The building impresses with its elegant rationalist architecture and travertine façade, complemented by allegorical sculptures by Ladislav Kofránek and artistic details in the interior. The ornamental ceiling decoration of the central hall was designed by František Kysela, making the interior one of the architectural gems of the 20th century. In the eastern wing, there is even a ceremonial apartment for the Prague mayor, furnished in Art Deco style.
The library itself is the largest public library in Prague, with a collection of more than 2 million documents. Visitors can borrow not only books but also music and films, reserve titles, use free internet access, and much more. In addition, the library regularly hosts cultural events, lectures, and exhibitions.
One of the most popular attractions for visitors is the Idiom sculpture, also known as the “infinite well.” This work by Slovak artist Matej Krén is made of thousands of books and two mirrors, creating a fascinating illusion of endless space. You can find it right opposite the main entrance – and it has become a favorite spot not only for literature lovers but also for photographers from around the world.
Since 1992, part of the second floor has also been used by the Prague City Gallery, which organizes regular exhibitions of contemporary art.
The Municipal Library at Mariánské Square is accessible to everyone – thanks to its barrier-free design, even visitors with disabilities can move around comfortably. It is thus not only a center of knowledge but also an open meeting place where history, culture, and modern services come together.
