On Letná Plain in Prague 7, directly above Čech Bridge and Edvard Beneš Embankment, stands the Prague Metronome – a monumental pendulum that has dominated the city skyline since 1991, symbolizing the passage of time and the changes in Czech history.
This nearly 25-meter-tall “Time Machine”, as named by its creator – sculptor and professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Vratislav Karel Novák – was installed on the site where one of the most controversial monuments of Czechoslovak history once stood: the Stalin Monument. That monument was demolished in 1962, and after years of emptiness, this massive reverse pendulum was erected here as a symbol of a new era, slowly swinging above the city.
The view from the Metronome is breathtaking – the panorama of the historic city center, the Vltava River, and Prague’s bridges stretches out before you. It’s a favorite spot for iconic photos, and at sunset, Letná becomes one of the most romantic viewpoints in the entire city.
An interesting fact: installing the Metronome was no easy task. Due to concerns about the structural integrity of the pedestal (after the Stalin monument was blown up), a crane couldn’t be used. The pendulum was placed on site by a giant helicopter.
Today, the Metronome is not just a historical landmark or scenic lookout but also a hub of city life. The area beneath it is popular with locals, especially skaters and rollerbladers, who come here to train and hang out. In summer, the atmosphere is relaxed and full of music, movement, and good vibes.
Whether you’re into history, city views, contemporary art, or are just looking for a peaceful spot with a unique atmosphere, the Prague Metronome is a fantastic tip for a trip or an afternoon stop while exploring Prague.
