Dušan Sekela is one of the outstanding artists of Slovak painting and one of the leading representatives of geometric abstraction. In the exhibition spaces of Danubiana we present a selection of his rich painting works from the last ten years.
Sekel’s artistic expression is based on original colour, shape and spatial configurations; the material composition of his relief paintings borders on “sculpture-painting”.
Colour has always played a very significant role in his work. He applies it on an atypical support, a concrete synthetic material, which allows him to create a three-dimensional image – a relief – where he applies colour by smearing, wiping, layering, casting, dabbing or dripping.
The geometric vibrating shape overlaps, juxtaposes or harmonizes with the coloured surface. The result is a compact morphology based on the juxtaposition of isosceles triangles, ellipses, spirals, rosettes, squares or quadrilaterals. When we perceive his works, we are impressed by the infinity and limitlessness of space. Sekel’s natural artistic interpretation is the dynamic gesture, the phenomenon of light, the contrasting colours and, above all, the very expressive movement in the structure of the surface.
However, the three-dimensional spatiality is also remarkable, as Sekela says, an attempt at 3D. In his works he has always expressed a desire for harmony in a chaotic world, trying to bring elements of spirituality and balance into the inner world of contemporary man, he is true to his artistic motto: “Art is not a metaphor of life, but of its ideas.”
Therefore, all the works carry a mission that contains the idea of not harming oneself, other people and one’s surroundings within contemporary civilization. It is natural that Sekela admires, as he says: “The breathtaking beauty of the cartography of our earth, the enchanting twinkle of mysterious stars, the fantastic richness of interpersonal relationships, love and art.”
