A monumental production of a romantic story with Verdi’s haunting music in one of the most popular works of operatic literature.
It was commissioned from as far away as exotic Cairo and was to be performed as part of the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal. Although this did not happen quite as planned and the work was performed a little later, the ceremonial character remained unchanged.
Aida’s music juxtaposes the flamboyant splendour of state and military ceremonies with tense moments of emotional conflict between the central protagonists, and the outward splendour of mass scenes with choruses and ballet numbers with intimately tuned passages of lyrical personal confessions. Aida is not only a gripping romantic story with haunting music, but also a narrative monumental fresco that draws the eyes as much as the ears.
The Ethiopian princess Aida was taken into Egyptian captivity, where she became a slave to the Egyptian princess Amneris. Both young women love the warlord Radames, but he shows his feelings for Aida. However, the lovers must face a difficult choice between loyalty to their country and love for each other. Unfavourable circumstances point towards an inevitable catastrophe. Love both fulfilled and unfulfilled, the bond to the motherland, jealousy, intrigue and revenge – Aida is a true romantic story. Thanks to Verdi’s haunting music and Pavel Smolík’s traditional direction, the production is a monumental historical fresco.
