As one of the oldest exercises, Qigong works directly on our organs and restores the flow of energy, which we call Qi, to strengthen the different parts of the body. Many of the types of Qigong were secret, passed down only through families or in temples (monasteries) among monks. The monks used these exercises mainly to maintain health, to have the energy to master martial arts, and to heal their organs and keep them healthy.

1. Ancient Chinese practice

Qigong, also written as Qi Gong or Chi Kung, is an ancient Chinese practice that combines physical movements, breathing techniques, and mental focus to cultivate and balance the body’s vital energy, known as Qi.

2. Life Energy

The term “Qigong” is composed of two Chinese characters, “Qi” meaning energy or life force and “Gong” meaning skill or cultivation. Qigong can thus be understood as the skillful cultivation of qi.

3. History

Qigong has a history of more than 4,000 years and is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and philosophy. It is considered a form of complementary and alternative medicine.

4. Styles

There are different styles and forms of qigong, ranging from gentle, flowing movements to static postures and meditation. Some styles emphasize physical health and vitality, while others focus more on spiritual development and the cultivation of inner energy.

5. Health benefits

Qigong is believed to have many health benefits. Regular practice is believed to increase physical strength, flexibility, balance, and overall well-being. It is also said to improve mental clarity, reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, and promote longevity. The twisting nature of the movement typical of Qigong benefits the whole body. By gently squeezing and massaging the internal organs, resistance to illness and injury is built. The postures release tension in the eyes, neck, back, hips and help reverse the effects of sitting or standing in one position for too long.
