Plant Odyssey—an exhibition and display on plant evolution. What did the first plants that colonized land look like? How were fossils formed, and what can scientists learn from ancient plant remains? Answers to these and other questions will be provided by the new exhibition “Plant Odyssey,” which will guide visitors through the fascinating story of plant evolution from the Paleozoic Era to the present.
The exhibition will showcase unique fossils, modern plant species, and the stories hidden within finds millions of years old. For example, you’ll learn about Cooksonia barrandei, the oldest known terrestrial plant native to what is now the Czech Republic, or the giant Paleozoic lycopods of the genus Lepidodendron, which once formed vast coal-forming swamps.
Also of interest are 3D models of herbivorous dinosaur skulls and displays of plants that may have been part of their diet. Visitors can also walk along a special trail in the garden and look for modern-day relatives of the plants they’ll see as fossils in the exhibition.
The project also includes a new permanent exhibition, “Plant Odyssey,” located above the Fata Morgana greenhouse. It presents the development of plants as a continuous process full of change, adaptation, and evolution that continues to this day.
