The Strahov Monastery in Prague 1 is the oldest Premonstratensian monastery in Bohemia, founded as early as 1140 thanks to Olomouc Bishop Jindřich Zdík and King Vladislav II.
Over more than eight centuries, it has become one of the most important architectural landmarks in the Czech Republic, and to this day remains a vibrant center of culture, faith, and knowledge.
The complex includes several unique buildings – the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church of St. Roch, farm buildings, and above all, the world-famous Strahov Library. This is considered one of the most beautiful historical libraries in the world. It holds tens of thousands of volumes and boasts stunning interiors such as the Theological and Philosophical Halls, whose baroque decoration creates an almost fairytale-like atmosphere.
Another gem is the Strahov Picture Gallery, founded by Abbot Ziedler, and regarded as the most valuable monastic collection in Central Europe. Its holdings include more than 1,500 paintings from the 14th to 19th centuries, with the most precious pieces displayed in the cloister of the convent building.
Beyond books and art, visitors can also explore the Treasury, opened in 2017. This exhibition showcases a hundred rare liturgical objects – monstrances, reliquaries, chalices, and embroidered vestments spanning from the Middle Ages to the present.
The Strahov Monastery is not only a historical monument but also a place that connects spiritual heritage with art and learning. Thanks to barrier-free access, it is open to everyone. If you are looking for a spot where history meets beauty and tranquility, the Strahov Monastery with its library is the perfect stop on your Prague journey.
