Letohrádek Hvězda Prague

Hvězda Summer Palace, located in the Hvězda Game Reserve on White Mountain in Prague 6, is one of the most remarkable Renaissance landmarks in the Czech Republic.

Its unique six-pointed star floor plan symbolizes the harmony of opposites, giving the building an almost magical aura.

Built between 1555 and 1556 by Ferdinand II of Tyrol, son of Emperor Ferdinand I, the summer palace served as a royal hunting lodge and retreat. The design involved prominent Italian architects Giovanni Maria Aostalli and Bonifác Wolmut. Inside, you’ll find richly decorated stucco with mythological themes, and in the cellar, a model of the famous Battle of White Mountain (1620), which took place nearby.

Over the centuries, the building served various purposes—from aristocratic residence to gunpowder storage, and later a museum. In the mid-20th century, it was restored by architect Pavel Janák, allowing visitors today to admire both its permanent exhibitions and well-preserved Renaissance architecture. Managed by the Museum of Czech Literature, the palace now hosts seasonal exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events.
