If you have ever walked past the Kampa Museum in Prague’s Malá Strana, you have probably noticed the giant bronze sculptures of babies with strangely deformed faces.
These iconic works, which evoke both curiosity and uncertainty, are the creation of controversial Czech artist David Černý and rank among the most fascinating public art installations in Prague.
The sculptures, simply named Babies, are part of a larger project that David Černý originally created for the Žižkov Television Tower. In 2000, ten of these bronze infants were placed on the towering landmark of Prague, appearing to “crawl” up and down its facade. The sculptures received widespread attention and eventually became one of the defining elements of Prague’s public space. Due to their popularity, another trio of Babies was later created and placed on Kampa, where visitors can view them up close.
The Babies on Kampa have become a popular tourist attraction, not only because of their unique aesthetic but also due to their interactive nature – visitors love taking photos with them, and some even attempt to climb them. Whether they fascinate, unsettle, or simply amuse you, they are definitely worth a stop to reflect on their message.
So next time you find yourself walking through Kampa, take a moment to immerse yourself in the world of David Černý. You might discover more in these mysterious bronze infants than meets the eye.
