From January 2 to December 30, 2025, you can visit the exhibitions People and Money and Behind the Currency, located in the historic vault of the Czech National Bank (ČNB) building in the center of the capital city.
If you’re interested in the history of money, currency, and the financial system, don’t miss these two fascinating exhibitions at the premises of the Czech National Bank in Prague.
People and Money – History of Currency and Finance
The People and Money exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the development of currency and finance in the Czech Republic within the context of European history. You’ll learn not only about the transformation of payment methods from their origins to the present but also about the history and significance of the Czech National Bank. One of the main attractions is a unique high-weight gold coin with a nominal value of CZK 100,000,000, issued in 2019 to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovak currency. This coin is the largest gold coin in Europe and the second-largest in the world!
The exhibition also features modern audiovisual programs and showcases the evolution of security features on banknotes. With its wide range of exhibits, you’ll leave with not only many fascinating facts but also a deeper understanding of the history of money and the financial system.
Behind the Currency – A Look Behind the Scenes of Central Banking
The second exhibition, Behind the Currency, takes you behind the scenes of the activities of the Czech National Bank. You’ll discover how the ČNB contributes to financial stability, ensures smooth cash circulation, and sets monetary policy. Interactive presentations explain decision-making processes, central banking tools, and the role of the ČNB in the international environment.
This exhibition offers insights into complex topics as well as activities for visitors—such as an escape game around the ČNB building or a treasure hunt within the exhibition space.
Practical Information:
The exhibitions are open Monday through Saturday. Visitors can come without prior reservation or book a time slot online, which is recommended for larger groups. Guided tours take place every Saturday at 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM, starting at the reception of the Visitor Center. Tours last 90 minutes and provide detailed information about the exhibits.
A variety of fun activities are available for families with children. Barrier-free access is guaranteed, and the Behind the Currency exhibition even includes a tactile section tailored for visually impaired visitors.
The People and Money and Behind the Currency exhibitions offer a unique perspective on the history of Czech and Czechoslovak currency and the operations of the Czech National Bank. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or curious about the modern workings of a central bank, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience.
