From April 11 to May 25, 2025, the popular live tropical butterfly exhibition, subtitled “The Magic of Attraction”, will take place in the Fata Morgana greenhouse.
Spring in the Prague Botanical Garden will once again bring an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to closely observe the fascinating life of these delicate creatures – from emerging from their chrysalises to their first flight into the space of the tropical greenhouse.
This year’s exhibition will focus on the theme of attraction and pollination. Visitors will learn how plants attract butterflies and the important role these elegant creatures play in the ecosystem. Unlike bees, which actively collect pollen, butterflies passively carry pollen across their entire bodies, ensuring the pollination of plants that are far apart. Thanks to their long proboscises, they can reach flowers that other pollinators cannot access.
The exhibition will also feature an interactive display, “The Secrets of Butterfly Life”, allowing visitors to examine the structure of butterfly wings under a microscope, test the function of a proboscis, and look into the world of butterflies through their own eyes. The exhibition will also highlight endangered butterfly species, including the Apollo butterfly, and offer ways in which we can contribute to their conservation.
An interesting fact is that the butterflies for the exhibition come from a renowned butterfly farm in Stratford-upon-Avon. Approximately 5,000 chrysalises of various species will gradually arrive at the greenhouse, from which not only daytime butterflies but also fascinating nocturnal moths will hatch. If you are lucky, you may witness the moment when a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis and spreads its wings for the first time.
In addition to the exhibition itself, thematic workshops will take place on weekends, offering creative activities for both young and adult visitors. Photography enthusiasts can look forward to a special photography workshop with Ondřej Prosický, which will take place on May 12. This exclusive course will allow participants to capture the beauty of butterflies in the tranquil environment of the greenhouse, without disturbances from other visitors.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased online or on-site, with online purchases offering a discounted price and faster entry. Due to the event’s popularity, it is recommended to plan your visit for quieter weekday afternoons.
Come and be enchanted by the vibrant beauty of butterflies and discover the secrets of their lives in the tropical Fata Morgana greenhouse!
