The Ján Cikker Foundation has been awarding the annual Ján Cikker Prize for several decades. It is dedicated to artists, musicologists or music ensembles that have made an outstanding contribution to the dissemination of the work of the genius composer.
For the first time in history, a string quartet will also receive this award. It is the Janáček Quartet, an ensemble that is one of the world’s most renowned ensembles. The Janáček Quartet has long been devoted to the work of the master Jan Cikker. Not only have they performed all of his quartet works, but their rich repertoire also includes several transcriptions of Cikker’s opuses. They have also recorded most of them on CD or other media.
The gala concert, associated with the awarding of the Jan Cikker Prize, will take place on Friday, 9 May 2025 at 6.00 pm in the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava and is open to the general public.
The concert will also feature a rare musical collaboration. The Janáček Orchestra and the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, which traditionally graces this festive act, will play Sir Edgar Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47 for string quartet and chamber orchestra. Of course, there will also be a work by Jan Cikker (Scherzo) as well as music by Leoš Janáček (String Quartet No. 2 “Letters of Confidence”).
Another unusual moment will be the solo performance of the Janáček Quartet’s principal composer Miloš Vacek with the chairman of the board of the Jan Cikker Foundation, Petr Michalica.
Accompanied by the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, they will perform the 1st movement from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra in D minor, BWV 1043. The SKO, under the direction of its artistic director Ewald Danel, will also perform the final movement of Dvořák’s String Quartet in F major “American”, Op. 96, impressively arranged for string orchestra.
