Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells in Concert premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in London in August 2021 to great acclaim. It is a celebration and tribute to Mike Oldfield, one of the greatest English composers of the last century.
Mike Oldfield is an English musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist, best known for his 1973 album Tubular Bells. This groundbreaking album, which contains a unique blend of progressive rock, classical music and experimental sound, was a major commercial success and became a defining work in the instrumental music genre.
Tubular Bells became the best-selling instrumental album of all time. Mike Oldfield had composed it two years earlier and recorded all the instruments himself. Tubular Bells went on to gain worldwide popularity thanks to the film The Exorcist, in which the first part of the album was used. Tubular Bells has sold nearly 3 million in the UK alone.
Oldfield’s innovative use of layered instruments and recording techniques helped him achieve recognition as a pioneering figure in music. Oldfield is also known for his distinctive style, which often includes complex melodies, intricate arrangements and a wide variety of instruments, many of which he plays himself.
Although Oldfield is primarily a guitarist, he plays other instruments such as keyboards or percussion, including tubular bells, 12 chrome tuba bells whose monumental sound gave the album a unique sound. Throughout his career, Mike Oldfield has ventured across many musical styles and genres, from progressive rock to world music, folk, and especially electronic, ambient and new age music.
Over the course of his career, Oldfield has influenced many artists and remains a key figure in the world of progressive and instrumental music.
Tubular Bells never gets old, and that’s amazing. It takes you on a journey through progressive rock and electronica, blues, folk, jazz and classical, evoking melodic beauty and drama.
