Tango Argentino, often referred to simply as “tango”, is a fascinating and rich dance with a deep cultural history. Here are some interesting facts:
1. Origin in the Rio de la Plata region
Tango originated in the late 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. It evolved from a mixture of African, European and indigenous influences, including music and dance styles such as the habanera, candombe and milonga.
2. Social dance
Although tango is often performed in formal settings today, it began to be danced in the street, in bars and cafes, where people from different social classes and backgrounds gathered to dance.
3. “Tango pose”
In tango, the characteristic embrace, often described as a “closed position”, serves not only to achieve intimacy, but also balance and connection.
4. Global influence of tango
Although tango originated in Argentina and Uruguay, it spread throughout the world in the early 20th century, especially after its introduction to Paris in 1910, where it quickly became popular among the European elite. It became a symbol of both romance and rebellion.
5. The music of the tango
Traditional tango music often includes instruments such as the bandoneón (a type of accordion), violin and piano. Particularly iconic is the bandoneón, which was imported to Argentina from Germany in the 19th century.
6. Tango and film
The tango plays an important role in film, often symbolising passion, danger and romance. Films such as Tango Lessons (1997) and Scent of a Woman (1992) introduced the dance and contributed to its international fame.
7. Tango as an intimate dialogue
Unlike many other partner dances, tango does not rely on steps that must be followed precisely. The dance develops through small, precise movements and the dancers often improvise, making each performance unique.
8. UNESCO Recognition
In 2009, UNESCO declared the tango argentino to be part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, acknowledging its cultural significance and the efforts made to preserve it.
