Exhibition of design studio students

We invite you to a summer exhibition in the Czech Center Gallery in the Czech House, which will present the work of students from the design studios of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

The tradition of design education in Zlín was born in the stifling era of the Protectorate. On the initiative of Jan Antonín Bata, half-brother of the founder of the company Tomáš Bata, the Art School was founded here in 1939. It was supposed to educate company experts, but its significance went far beyond this dimension.

At that time, the already well-known sculptor Vincenc Makovský took on the role of teacher of the nascent field of industrial art at the Art School. His collaborator and later successor in the role of teacher focused on the field of industrial art, from which modern industrial design was formed in Czechoslovakia thanks to him, was soon his most talented student Zdeněk Kovář.

After the end of World War II, Zdeněk Kovář established himself as an internationally recognized designer. His search for the optimal way to educate designers gradually led to the founding of a branch studio of the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Zlín.

Zdeněk Kovář surrounded himself with collaborators, and upon his retirement, he handed over the leadership of the department to his assistant, the future professor Pavel Škarek. He transferred his “no-nonsense” design teaching methods to the newly established Tomáš Baťa University, within which a separate Faculty of Multimedia Communications was founded in 2002.

Following dynamic growth, this faculty now offers education in a wide range of design disciplines—including audiovisual and animated production, photography, marketing, and arts management, it offers education in a wide range of design disciplines: footwear, apparel, jewelry, glass, industrial, product, graphic, digital, game, and spatial design. Students in the design programs at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Baťa University have presented their work at a number of exhibitions at renowned domestic and international institutions.

At the Czech Center in Bratislava, they are presenting their current work, which illustrates the quality of design that reflects the continuously evolving tradition of Zlín design.
