Lubomír Typlt is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Czech figurative painting. Since the late 1990s, he has established himself on the domestic and international art scene with his unmistakable expressive style and original visual language.
In addition to painting, he also creates objects, kinetic installations and writes lyrics as part of the WWW Neurobeat music project.
The exhibition will present a selection of works in which the author penetrates the depths of the human psyche, explores interpersonal relationships and reflects social moods. Through characteristic characters, strong visual metaphors and multi-layered stories, he creates images that are simultaneously captivating, disturbing and universally understandable.
Over the past three decades, Typlt’s work has naturally changed and developed, depicting various corners of the mind and positions of interpersonal relationships. His extensive portfolio reveals long-term and temporary fascinations with specific motifs, which he obsessively paints, varies, and constantly seeks ways to best sharpen his vision. New symbols, characters, or deviations from defined procedures have their justified place in building a strong and convincing artistic program. The author creates various thematic areas, brings new visual metaphors or character archetypes, through which he develops multilayered micro-stories and, in turn, activates the viewer’s imagination.
Typlt’s work is not for everyone, but it is about everyone. He purposefully suppresses individual identity in favor of group dynamics. The characters he places in the foreground resemble puppets on an empty stage, where their mutual relationships, close proximity, and associated artifacts define tense scenes. At first glance, they are simple and immediately catch the eye, but at the same time they remain aesthetically distant from what we consider to be a common idea of beauty. The author’s works open portals to the darkest corners of the human mind, but at the same time they universally reflect social moods and respond to the geopolitical atmosphere. Character interactions, linear narratives and emotional layers thus remain understandable to anyone, anywhere.
The exhibition is curated by Michal Stolárik.
