One of the most popular works of the world opera repertoire is a fascinating essence of French charm and Spanish passion. Carmen is a riveting musical drama in which, in addition to a host of popular arias, operatic history is transformed on stage before the audience’s eyes. It begins as an opéra comique, turns into a romantic drama and finally culminates as a veristic opera. The powerful story of the strength of human passions is spiced with spirited and moving melodies and haunting rhythms. But there is more to director Lubor Cukor’s new production than a story of fleeting love; Carmen becomes a symbol of freedom. Love as both fate and misfortune: direct, cynical, innocent, cruel and, precisely because of that, free.
