The romantic ballet Giselle is a gem of the world’s ballet literature. The touching story of immortal love from the pen of Théophile Gautier and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges has been moving audiences since 1841. To the strains of Adolphe Charles Adam’s musical score, a choreographic drama flows on stage in which the real world is confronted with the supernatural, the dances of mortals are interspersed with the aerial dances of fairies.
Adam’s ballet Giselle belongs to the historical legacy of the High Romantic period and is also one of the most performed works of the world’s ballet companies. Since its first performance in Paris in 1841, it has held the attention of audiences around the world – thanks not only to the moving romantic story by librettists Théophile Gautier and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges, but also to the melodic and rhythmic lightness of the music by the important Romantic composer Adolphe Charles Adam. The ballet, which today ranks among the most charming and oldest works of classical ballet literature, will be performed in its academic purity and brilliance in Rafael Avnikian’s staging.
