The One World International Human Rights Film Festival 2025 will take place from March 12 to March 20 in Prague and will then travel to other Czech and Moravian cities.
This largest human rights film festival in the world, organized by People in Need, will present its 27th edition, showcasing current social issues through documentary and fiction films.
The festival focuses on a wide range of human rights topics, from political and social issues to environmental concerns and modern technologies. A recent addition in the past years has been the inclusion of fiction films, which thematically complement documentaries and offer another perspective on human rights issues.
This year’s edition will particularly focus on the situation in Slovakia, which will be reflected in the non-competitive category Slovak Path. This section explores the fragility of democracy, the importance of civil society, and current political and social challenges faced by our neighbors. Among the key films in this category is The Question of the Future, directed by Maroš Brázda, a documentary following Slovak students during the 2023 parliamentary elections.
The festival will also present other powerful themes. Mr. Nobody vs. Putin, directed by David Borenstein, tells the story of Russian teacher Pavel Talankin, whose life was transformed into a tool of propaganda following the invasion of Ukraine. The film reveals the impact of the state regime on the daily lives of ordinary people.
The current situation in the United States is reflected in Zurawski vs. the State of Texas, which follows the story of Amanda Zurawski, a woman fighting against Texas’ abortion laws, which denied her medical care despite serious health complications. Directed by Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, the film provides a powerful testimony on the legal and societal consequences of strict legislation in the United States.
Modern technologies and their impact on human emotions are explored in I Feel Nothing, which examines the influence of social media on users’ psychology and the mechanisms used to manipulate human emotions.
The festival does not shy away from war conflicts and the refugee crisis. On the Edge follows 11-year-old Arafat, a Palestinian refugee, who lives in an abandoned hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. Through his story, the audience gains an intimate insight into the daily lives of those forced to leave their homes.
One World 2025 promises powerful, inspiring, and thought-provoking films, raising fundamental questions about today’s world. The festival will not only offer film screenings but also a rich accompanying program, including discussions with directors, experts, and activists. The Prague part of the festival will take place from March 12 to March 20, after which the films will travel to other cities across the country.
