Bratislava in Motion

The 28th International Festival of Contemporary Dance – Bratislava in Motion will take place this year from 5 to 28 October.

The headliners of this year’s Bratislava in Motion International Dance Festival will be contemporary dance companies from Spain. The dance of this country is expressive, full of energy and imagination. Sometimes it is dark, sometimes colourful, but always full of emotions that are sometimes hidden, then suddenly come out in full. It is a dance influenced by tradition, from which some artists draw and others try to break away. Above all, however, the dance art of Spain is intoxicated by life – it is a celebration of it, embodying its energy and its transience, expressing its multiplicity, its joys and its difficulties, and mostly hiding its messages under the guise of symbols, metaphors and images.

What kind of future do you want for your grandchildren?

Movement improvisation, limited by an intricate construction, as an artistic reflection of the current development of society. The performance raises the question of our responsibility towards future generations. It addresses serious issues such as the climate crisis and the increasing tension and aggression in society. This interdisciplinary work connects physical performance, sound design, and visual installation. The creators’ final message expresses a sense of anticipation and hope based on the belief that people have the ability to realize their individual responsibility for the shape of the world we live in.

Yuri Korec & Co. (Slovakia): THE STORY

Five bodies in the main role of a dance sci-fi Juraj Korec and his team were inspired by sci-fi poetics, where the human body often finds itself in unusual, even inhospitable conditions, facing surprising challenges. They created a specific playing situation for five bodies. In it, spatiotemporal coordinates do not apply, there is no horizon, seemingly neither past nor progress exists. Movement is possible, but only backward. Where can one go if one can only backtrack? Who are these five, why and how did they find themselves in this peculiar situation? At what moment will their story stop, and what will they face in the captivity of an inexorable algorithm? The international co-production dance project THE STORY narrates with the body, employing a radical strategy in which the perspectives of performers and spectators never meet.

La Veronal (Spain): Sonoma

A mesmerizing dance by a group of women on the edge of dream and reality

The choreographer Marcos Morau creates a captivating and magical atmosphere with the power of movement, word, music and artistic elements. In scenic form, religion, folklore and mysticism intertwine here. Sonoma is inspired by Luis Buñuel’s surrealism. It is a cry of a man who tries to survive at the limit of his existence. Sonoma balances dream, fiction and reality. A group of women want to free themselves from the ties of the past, and cross boundaries using their intuition and instinct. The inner weeping that women share gradually grows stronger as it transforms into a celebration ritual with sacrifices, hypnotic songs, and dances. This state liberates their minds, but at the same time reminds them of their transience. ‘If there is a heaven, it is here and now.’

Mucha Muchacha (Spain): Para cuatro jinetes

An exhilarating journey through the enigmatic realms of Spanish folklore

The young generation of female artists in Para cuatro jinetes (For four riders) refers to folklore, which is still dominant in the country’s culture, but transforms it into a form of contemporary performance, charged with energy. For the creators, folklore is a mysterious and confusing place full of legends, ceremonies, feasts and dances created in the past.Para cuatro jinetes is a work that speaks of a body capable of holding back time. A body that is both a rider and a horse, a body that knows how to humbly ride the fictions of our past, present and future, and gives us a chance to better understand who we are and what we do.

Evening of dance films

Dance films are the realm of artistic freedom and powerful creative concepts. The offered collection will be a clear proof of that. The genre of the selection ranges from a fanciful dance comedy to a docu-metaphor to a dark horror mirage.Seven films and each one is different.
