Salzburg is a city in the north-western part of Austria. Some people recognize it to be the birthplace of the one and only Mozart but in our opinion, it is much more than that. It´s a historic city full of wonders. One of those wonders is for sure Mirabell Palace, built in the early 17th century to be the residence of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau who had it built with the intention to spend time there with his mistress whose name was Salome Alt.
The palace together with the surrounding gardens has been listed as a cultural heritage monument and is one of the most visited landmarks of the city of Salzburg. Later, the new owner had it rebuilt in the Baroque style and its name “Mirabell” comes from two words: admirable & beautiful (it. bella).
The gardens of the Mirabell Palace are one of the most beautiful sights you can see while perusing the city. The statues there are all mythology-themed and have been designed by Italian artist Ottavio Mosti in the late 17th century. Other interesting things you may see there are sylvan theatre and large greenhouse typical for the 17th and 18th century called “orangery”. Fruit trees and plants which are not good with cold weather have been preserved here during the cold winter months.
Through the virtual tour you´ll find below you´ll have a chance to explore the halls of the whole palace and see its famous Marble Hall which serves as a concert venue for the “Salzburg Palace Concerts” today. Those who have seen The Sound of Music are probably well acquittanced with this enchanting hall with high ceilings and lots of gold embellishment on the walls but we think it is worth exploring more.
