One of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe, Vrtba Garden in Prague’s Malá Strana, will open its gates to visitors for the new season on March 20, 2026, at 10:00 AM.
This hidden gem of Prague, located on the slope of Petřín Hill on Karmelitská Street, attracts lovers of history, architecture, and romantic city views every year.
Vrtba Garden is a unique Italian-style terraced garden built between 1715 and 1720 for Count Jan Josef of Vrtba, the Supreme Burgrave of Prague Castle at the time. The garden was designed by architect František Maxmilián Kaňka, while the sculptural decorations were created by the renowned Baroque sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun. The fresco on the vault of the sala terrena was painted by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. Thanks to this collaboration, a remarkable Baroque complex was created that today ranks among the most valuable historic gardens north of the Alps.
The garden is known for its cascading terraces, ornamental hedges, Baroque statues, and a fountain with a water basin. From the individual terraces, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Petřín Hill, Malá Strana, and the historic center of Prague. In the lower part of the garden there is also a large aviary where visitors can admire exotic birds. With the arrival of the new season, new feathered residents will join the aviary, including the California quail, the smoky parrot, and the splendid parrot.
A highlight of the spring season will be the ceremonial evening illumination of the garden, which will take place on April 9, 2026, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. On this occasion, the historic garden will transform into a magical space filled with light and atmosphere, offering visitors a unique experience of walking among the Baroque sculptures and terraces.
Vrtba Garden is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and, in addition to regular visits, also serves as an attractive venue for weddings, concerts, exhibitions, and social events. Thanks to a careful reconstruction in the 1990s, the garden preserved its original Baroque character and is now protected as a cultural monument listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
If you are looking for a place to welcome spring in Prague, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of a historic garden, and admire unique views of the city, Vrtba Garden is one of the most enchanting spots to visit.
