At the turn of November and December, Prague will transform into the heart of the European comic art scene. The Frame Prague Comics Art Festival 2024, marking the 8th edition of this international showcase of authorial comics, illustration, and self-publishing, will take place from November 30 to December 2 at Divadlo X10.
This annual event, drawing creators, publishers, and fans from around the globe, showcases the best of contemporary comics and offers visitors a unique experience filled with inspiration, emotion, and creativity.
The main theme of this year’s festival is “Home,” which will be reflected in exhibitions, discussions, and residency projects. The concept of home resonates deeply in the “Safe Place” exhibition, where Ukrainian artists, led by curator Anna Sarvira from the Pictoric organization, explore their perceptions of a safe space. Another highlight is the exhibition of works created during the FRAME and Casa Baba residency programs. Students from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Art and Design will also present an exhibition inspired by Franz Kafka’s stories. Each project offers a unique perspective on what home means to us, providing a profound and contemporary insight into this universal human experience.
Beyond its thematic focus, the festival will spotlight the vibrant Spanish comic scene, one of the most dynamic in Europe. Headlining the event is María Medem, one of Spain’s most prominent comic artists whose work has garnered fans worldwide. Other highlights include Barcelona’s pioneering Apa Apa publishing house, known for championing innovative comics, and renowned critic and historian Gerardo Vilches, whose lecture will provide a unique view of the evolution and trends in Spanish comics.
The festival also strengthens international collaboration and supports emerging talent. Partnerships with institutions such as the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Art and Design in Pilsen and ÉESI in Angoulême, France, make FRAME a vital platform for cultural exchange and European comic creation. This year’s edition is part of the European BJE2425 project, connecting FRAME with Italy’s Baba Jaga Festival and Latvia’s kuš! publishing house. This project brings a new dimension to the festival, fostering collaboration with a broader network of European creators and publishers.
A significant addition to this year’s program is a third day dedicated to professionals. The FRAME Baba Jaga MRKT section, organized in collaboration with the French Institute, will feature discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities for publishers and distributors across Europe. This new Monday program facilitates international collaborations and links comics with other fields, such as GameArt, which makes its festival debut this year.
The Frame Prague Comics Art Festival 2024 is an invitation to dive into the world of comics, explore current trends, discover new talents, and be inspired by boundary-crossing stories. Whether you’re a fan of comics, an illustration enthusiast, or seeking a cultural experience that will enrich you, this festival is not to be missed. Mark your calendars for November 30 to December 2 and prepare to celebrate the creative universe of authorial comics in the heart of Prague.
