Vyšehrad Gardens are one of those places in Prague that often escape the attention of tourists, but they certainly shouldn’t.

This expansive park is located atop Vyšehrad hill and offers not only beautiful views of the Vltava River and Prague’s skyline, but also a peaceful environment where you can pause and catch your breath.

The history of this place runs deep. Vyšehrad is steeped in many legends – according to one, Princess Libuše ruled here and foretold the future glory of the city of Prague. In the past, Vyšehrad was an important seat of Czech rulers, and thanks to its strategic location, it played a key role in defending the city. Today, it is primarily a space full of history, greenery, and incredible tranquility.

While strolling through Vyšehrad Gardens, you’ll undoubtedly come across several significant landmarks. One of the oldest is the Rotunda of St. Martin, dating back to the 11th century. This simple yet impressive Romanesque structure takes you back to medieval times. Another prominent feature of Vyšehrad is the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. This beautiful neo-Gothic church with its striking towers forms one of Prague’s most distinctive silhouettes. Inside, you’ll find richly decorated frescoes and vibrant stained glass windows that will leave you in awe.

Next to the basilica lies Vyšehrad Cemetery, the final resting place of notable figures from Czech history, such as composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, writer Karel Čapek, and painter Alfons Mucha. The cemetery is a quiet place for reflection and remembrance of the nation’s cultural heritage.

For those seeking something a bit more adventurous, I recommend visiting the Vyšehrad Casemates – underground passages that once served to defend the fortress. Today, part of this space is used to display original sculptures from Charles Bridge.

One of the greatest attractions of Vyšehrad Gardens is its atmosphere. Unlike the bustling tourist spots in the city center, here you’ll find peace. You can sit on a bench, take in the view of the city, or have a picnic on one of the sprawling grassy areas. In the summer, various cultural events like concerts and open-air theater performances take place here, making the park popular among locals as well.

Vyšehrad Gardens are also easily accessible from the city center. The simplest way to get here is by taking the metro (line C) and getting off at “Vyšehrad” station. From there, a pleasant walk through the park toward the fortress awaits you, during which you can enjoy views of Prague’s panorama. The journey itself is an experience worth having.

Vyšehrad Gardens are the ideal place for those who want to experience Prague from a different perspective – quieter, more intimate, yet still full of history and beauty. It’s a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in its peaceful atmosphere.
