The Summer Shakespeare Festival 2025 will take place in Prague from June 25 to September 6, 2025, offering an unforgettable cultural experience set against the stunning backdrops of Prague Castle and Malostranské Square.
As the largest and oldest open-air festival in Europe dedicated to the work of William Shakespeare, it once again brings both classic and newly reimagined productions of the world-renowned playwright to the Czech capital.
Performances will be held in the courtyard of the Supreme Burgrave’s House at Prague Castle and on the outdoor stage of the Liechtenstein Palace. The festival will open with the premiere of the tragedy Othello, directed by Braňo Holič. Alongside this new production, audiences can also look forward to well-loved plays from previous years, including Macbeth, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Winter’s Tale, and more. A newly staged play for this season will be The Taming of the Shrew.
The festival attracts tens of thousands of spectators each year and has earned a firm place in the Czech cultural calendar thanks to the high quality of its productions and its prestigious reputation. Each evening’s performance takes place under the open sky in the heart of historic Prague, creating a unique and atmospheric theatrical experience.
The Summer Shakespeare Festival was initiated by President Václav Havel, who opened Prague Castle to cultural events in the 1990s. Since 1998, the festival has been organized by AGENTURA SCHOK, which has developed it into a celebrated international event. Over the years, the festival has become not only a cultural phenomenon but also a gathering place for generations of theatre lovers and history enthusiasts.
