Did you know that wolves are very social creatures? They live in packs that usually form a family group, including a breeding pair and their offspring. Wolves are territorial animals and will defend their territory from other packs. Their territory can range from 50 to over 1,000 square miles depending on the availability of prey.
Wolves often hunt in packs, which allows them to take down larger prey such as deer, elk, and bison. They use teamwork and strategic planning to increase their chances of a successful hunt. While wolves primarily hunt large ungulates, they also occasionally consume smaller mammals, birds, and even fruits and vegetables.
In the wild, wolves usually live to be about 6 to 8 years old, but wolves in captivity can live up to 16 years or more. Throughout history, wolves have appeared in many myths, legends, and folklore, often symbolizing strength, loyalty, and intelligence.
They are the ancestors of domestic dogs, which diverged from a common ancestor about 15,000 years ago. This genetic link highlights their adaptability and resilience.
Come admire these unique creatures with us! See you at the zoo!
