Jesus of Montreal

At the cathedral above Montreal, the annual Easter Passion Play about the death of Jesus Christ is performed. The production is in need of a bit of a refresh – over the years, the acting of the leads has become pathetic and unbelievable.

For the role, the priest approaches a young, unconventional theatre director, Daniel, who writes a new script and assembles a cast – Martin, whose acting career has been reduced to dubbing porn films, Mireille, who has been reduced to her body by show business, the life-beaten Constance, and Rene, who has dreamed of playing Hamlet all his life.

The new production may not exactly meet with enthusiasm among church leaders, but the Passion story grows from production to life and has an extraordinary impact on the audience and the actors themselves. Arcand’s story is a search for the meaning and place of spirituality in a modern, urbanised, scientific world, but also a satirical look at the world of art, and theatre in particular.
