Rusalka is the story of a water fairy who lives with her companions and her father, the Waterman, in a forest lake. She longs to become human in order to know love. Witch helps her, but on the condition that she remains mute, and if she loses her love, she must return to the lake as a wanderer. In the forest, the Prince gets lost, meets Rusalka and falls in love with her. Rusalka returns his love and goes with him to the castle. After a while, however, the Prince tires of her. The desperate Rusalka confides in the Waterman and he swears revenge. The Prince realises his mistake too late, finds Rusalka in the forest, embraces her and dies in her arms.
Dvořák’s Rusalka reveals a multitude of symbolic and psychological meanings unseen at first sight, depicting not only the battle of sincerity with hypocrisy and betrayal, but also the eternal struggle of light and darkness, the dream of eternity and the reality of mortality. The main character may be a water fairy, but her heart is also full of deep human feelings – longing and love. In fact, she is always alone – she has to make her own decisions and face the tragic consequences of her choices.
The opera is full of dazzling musical beauty and is one of the theatrical works that moves audiences around the world. Director Martin Kákoš’s production is a beautiful and engaging tale for the whole family.
