What were the sweet roads that brought the gingerbread man to Europe? How was gingerbread dough prepared and why did it need to take a long time to mature? What was the difference between a gingerbread house and a gingerbread house? What roles did gingerbread fulfill at Christmas and why was it one of the first ornaments on the Christmas tree? When did gingerbread reach its peak in production and sales and what could be made from gingerbread dough? Why was the gingerbread a gift of love and why is it still prepared by hand today?
You will learn about the ornaments of gingerbread and their importance for people’s pleasure, about gingerbread forms, honey and beekeepers at the lecture of historian and ethnologist Katarína Nádaská.
She graduated from the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava (ethnology – history – religious studies). She worked as a researcher at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Bratislava, lectured at the UCM in Trnava, the Charles University in Nitra, the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Prague. She worked at the Museum of the City of Bratislava and the Theatre Institute. She is the author of many monographs, scientific studies and popularization articles, co-author of a series of 12 ethnological film documentaries about personalities of Slovak ethnology. She currently works in local government. She is devoted to popularization of science – history of everyday life, traditions and customs in Slovak folk culture, religious ethnology, ethnomedicine, folk magic, annual customs.
