Car-Free Weekend in Budapest

September 19–20 will mark one of Budapest’s most unique weekends: during Car-Free Weekend, several of the city’s iconic locations will be temporarily closed to traffic, creating a vast urban area—from Kálvin Square through Fővám Square and the Szabadság Bridge all the way to the Lower Pest Embankment and the Technical University Embankment—that can be explored on foot or by bike.

The event is part of European Mobility Week, and in 2026 it will welcome visitors across a larger area than ever before. One of the best activities for the weekend is simply taking a walk. It’s worth starting from Kálvin Square, walking down to Fővám Square, and then crossing the traffic-free Szabadság Bridge, which offers a truly spectacular view of the Danube, Gellért Hill, and downtown Budapest. On the bridge and around Vámház Boulevard, visitors can also enjoy some transportation-themed highlights: at the BKK and BKV vehicle exhibition, you can see old and modern trams, retro trolleybuses, and buses, and you can even board several of them.

Of particular interest to public transportation enthusiasts will be the authentically restored 1971 Ikarus 311 bus and the modern CAF tram, which clearly illustrate the evolution of public transportation in Budapest.

However, the event is not just about sightseeing. Visitors can try out the bus driver simulator, learn about how BudapestGO and FUTÁR work, and participate in bike and scooter test rides. MOL Bubi is preparing a special promotion on September 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: visitors can name a total of 100 shared bicycles and then follow the story of their chosen bike for a year.

Sports enthusiasts should also head to the riverfront, as the KSI Rollerski Sprint Challenge Hungarian Cup race will be held there. In addition to the competition, visitors can try their hand at roller skiing, roller skating, and laser biathlon, and the program also includes skill challenges, a freestyle demonstration, and a roller skating disco.

One of the new features of the 2026 event is the inclusion of the Műegyetem Embankment, where the focus will be on traffic safety and accessible transportation. Interactive programs, a traffic rules quiz, an obstacle course, simulations, and accident prevention games await visitors, and participants can even learn the basics of CPR. Fővám Square is a particularly good choice for families, where a play bus, a kids’ corner, face painting, and a fun traffic park await the little ones.

At the end of the day, gastronomy takes center stage: a food promenade awaits visitors on Vámház Boulevard and the Műegyetem Embankment, where food trucks offer a variety of international dishes.
