Open Markets Day

From September 18 to 20, the city’s markets will once again take centre stage during the National Open Market Days. Now taking place for the fourth time, the event brings together 26 markets and market halls across Hungary under the motto “The Market – The Heart of the City.”

One of the main themes of this year’s three-day programme is “Breakfast at the Market – Where the City Wakes Up”, highlighting markets not only as places to shop, but also as important meeting points for local communities.

In Budapest, 15 markets will take part in the programme, making the weekend a great opportunity to explore some of the city’s markets as part of a unique gastronomic journey. At Lehel Market Hall, visitors can enjoy a special musical market breakfast hosted by renowned Hungarian food writer and presenter Zsófi Mautner, while the Great Market Hall will offer a lively fair atmosphere, a photo exhibition and guided tours. At Rákóczi Square Market Hall, the focus will also be on a traditional market breakfast, accompanied by a choir festival.

Fény Street Market will offer special programmes throughout the entire weekend, while Hunyadi Square Market will put a strong emphasis on sustainability. At Teleki Square Market, visitors can discover the gastronomy of five different nations, making the event particularly appealing to those who want to explore flavours beyond traditional Hungarian cuisine. Across the participating markets, visitors can also expect tastings, special offers, local producers, fresh ingredients and live cooking demonstrations.

The National Open Market Days are therefore an ideal weekend programme for anyone looking to discover a more authentic, less touristy side of Budapest while enjoying great food and experiencing the atmosphere of the city’s traditional markets. It is worth setting aside a whole morning or even an entire day to visit several locations – starting with breakfast at Lehel Market Hall, followed by a walk and tastings at the Great Market Hall, and finishing with lunch or another special gastronomic experience at one of the city’s smaller markets. It is a relaxed and atmospheric way to experience Budapest during the September weekend.
