Nativity scenes in St. Joseph’s Church

Visit the unique nativity scene in the monastic Church of St. Joseph in Prague 1, which will be on display on January 12, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The nativity scene is set in a simple setting with a central motif of a modest hut where the Holy Family resides. The Three Kings approach from one side, shepherds from the other, and each figure fixes its gaze on the manger, symbolizing the essence of Christmas.

The work, created by an unknown carver, is enriched with folkloric elements and plaster figurines. The vibrant polychrome and striking lacquer give the manger a unique appearance. During Christmas, the exhibition also features a figure of the Baby Jesus in a cradle, which, according to tradition, the sisters of the monastery rock while singing carols.

About the Church of St. Joseph
The Baroque monastic Church of St. Joseph dates back to 1686–1692 and is renowned for its rich architecture and furnishings. The monumental façade and interior of the church are among Prague’s treasures. Originally serving the Discalced Carmelites, it is now the monastic church of the Congregatio Jesu.

The church is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a regular spiritual program, including Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Wednesday Mass.
