Hair Musical Budapest

The world-famous Hair Musical will be performed on 8 January on two dates. The work, released in 1968, after its fluctuating stage recognition, was finally made a worldwide success by the film version presented in 1979 directed by Milos Forman. So this performance will follow in the same vein, striving to stay as closely as possible the structure of the basic work, which in some places differs radically from the film. A special feature of the production is the “Hungarian thread” that runs through the dramaturgy, in the person and fate of one of the protagonists, Claude Bukowski.

Claude is a descendant of a Polish-Hungarian family who emigrated in ’56 and is called up. A young man from multi-ethnic Central Europe who is forced to join the army and go to war in multi-ethnic America. In New York, he finds himself in the company of a young man in search of his identity, who is expressing his desire for freedom in many different ways. The group, led by Berger, burns its draft card before the draft, and Claude is expected to do the same. They rebel and suffer from it – they are searching for their identity, their connection to their country and the national flag that symbolizes it.
The narrative of the finale of the play is a poem by Miklós Radnóti, entitled “Erőltetett Menet”. The content of the performance is the same as the original, only much deeper and closer to us.
