The legendary German opera director Peter Konwitschny returned to Bratislava to stage another title at the Slovak National Theatre after Eugene Onegin and Madama Butterfly – Puccini’s La Bohème. The director tells the compelling story of four poor young artists without sentimentality, simply and convincingly. Puccini’s veristic interpretation mixes smiling scenes with tragic ones as a faithful picture of everyday life; and Konwitschny’s view of it is both penetrating and full of understanding. Where does the line between smiling and weeping lead? Do young men on the fringes of society seek a woman’s arms for the sake of it, out of spite, or is their longing for love their cry for help? In the hands of director Konwitschny, Boheme loses none of its beauty – and gains dramatic truth and power in the process.
