The mission of the BAB festival is to enable artistic confrontation of animation for children, to trace its connection to illustration, to create conditions for its evaluation and thus to support the all-round development of this kind of film art.

Since 1985 it has been a part of the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava – BIB.

In 1991 the show gained the status of an international film festival.

Since 2003 BAB has been a competitive festival. The international jury awards several important prizes.

Since 2012, a competition for children interested in animation : Flipbook Competition.

Since 2013, the BAB Atelier has also been operating within the festival as a regular animation workshop, where a permanent group of children work on collaborative animation projects. The result of their activity was their first animated film Forest – Home of the Animals in 2014. This was followed by the next films You’re Never Alone (2016), About a Masked Fox (2016), Rudko the Scarecrow (2018) and in 2019 they completed their fifth film, The Magic Ice Cream.

In 2014, the festival competition was presented in two other Slovak cities – Skalica and Prievidza.

In 2016, the BAB Festival expanded with a new discussion platform – the BAB International Forum on the topic “From Illustration to Animation”.

In 2018, Košice, Prešov and Myjava were added to the festival cities.
