Vienna opens its doors

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, Austria will once again celebrate the Heritage Day (Tag des Denkmals), the country’s contribution to the European Heritage Days. On this occasion, numerous historic buildings and museums in Vienna will open their doors free of charge – including special areas that usually remain closed to the public.

This year’s theme is: “Preserve the monument, experience it digitally” (DENKMAL bewahren, DIGITAL erfahren), highlighting how digital technology can support the protection of cultural heritage and create new ways to experience history.

Among the highlights is the Austrian National Library, where visitors can admire the magnificent Baroque State Hall (Prunksaal), join guided tours, and enjoy special programs for children. At the MuseumsQuartier, exclusive tours will take participants up to the Baroque roof structure – a rare opportunity to explore one of Europe’s largest cultural complexes from a completely new perspective. For those willing to venture a little outside the city, the nearby Schallaburg Castle will offer historian-led tours through hidden areas that are normally off-limits.

Heritage Day is the perfect opportunity for both locals and visitors to discover Vienna’s architectural treasures from a fresh angle in just one day.
