The Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) stands as one of the world’s foremost art museums. Housed in a grand neo-Renaissance palace on Maria-Theresien-Platz, it was built between 1871 and 1891 by Emperor Franz Joseph I to showcase the extensive Habsburg collections. Inside, vast galleries, opulent staircases, and monumental architecture create a setting as magnificent as the art it contains.
What You’ll Find
European Painting Gallery: Home to the world’s largest collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder masterpieces—such as The Tower of Babel, Children’s Games, and Hunters in the Snow. Other highlights include works by Rubens, Vermeer’s The Art of Painting, Caravaggio, Titian, and Dürer.
Kunstkammer Wien: A dazzling imperial \”Cabinet of Curiosities\” containing over 2,100 objet d’art—miniatures, timepieces, ivories, porcelain, and the legendary Cellini salt cellar (Saliera). One of the most extraordinary collections of its kind.
Permanent Collections: The Egyptian‑Oriental Collection, Greek and Roman Antiquities, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, and an illustrious coin cabinet. All part of one ticket covering the KHM’s main building.
