Donauinsel, or the Danube Island, is one of Vienna’s most unique and beloved leisure destinations. Stretching 21 kilometers between the Danube and the New Danube (Neue Donau), this man-made island offers a perfect balance of nature, recreation, and community space. It’s a true urban oasis where locals and visitors alike can picnic, swim, bike, jog, or simply unwind—all just minutes from the city center.
A place where everyone finds their rhythm
1. Picnicking, lounging, relaxing
With wide grassy areas and shady trees, Donauinsel is perfect for picnics, sunbathing, or simply taking a break. Whether you bring a blanket, a book, or a group of friends, there’s always a quiet spot to settle in. Thanks to its length, it never feels overcrowded—ideal for both romantic escapes and casual gatherings.
2. Swimming and beach vibes in the city
Several parts of the island offer free access to the Danube for swimming. The southern section, known as Südinsel, is especially popular for its gentle shoreline and clean water. This area also features the famous Copa Cagrana, a relaxed beach zone that used to be a bustling bar quarter, now perfect for families and laid-back afternoons.
3. Sports and outdoor activities
Donauinsel is a haven for active visitors: jogging paths, bike lanes, skate routes, open-air gyms, and water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding are all available—and free to use. You’ll also find beach volleyball courts, basketball hoops, and even a BMX park. It’s a perfect playground for those who love outdoor fitness without the crowd of a gym.
4. Ideal for cycling
A continuous cycling path runs the entire length of the island, making it a cyclist’s dream. You can enjoy a quick spin or plan a full-day ride. Donauinsel connects to the Danube Cycle Path (Donauradweg), a famous international route perfect for discovering Vienna and beyond on two wheels.
5. Culture and music under the open sky
While nature is the star, Donauinsel also hosts a range of open-air events. The most famous is the Donauinselfest, Europe’s largest free outdoor music festival, drawing crowds from across the continent. Throughout the summer, smaller concerts, DJ sets, and performances also take place—especially on weekends.
6. A family-friendly destination
Donauinsel welcomes visitors of all ages. Kids can enjoy playgrounds, sand pits, and calm shorelines, while parents relax nearby. With so much space, it never feels cramped, and there’s always something to explore—from nature trails to adventure areas.
Getting there: Easiest via the U1 subway (Donauinsel station). Several other access points are available by bike, foot, or bridge (e.g., Reichsbrücke).
Opening hours: Open 24/7, all year round.
Admission: Free
