Maria Bill at Tunnel Vienna Live

The chansons of Jacques Brel, the Belgian-born poet, had a special meaning for Maria Bill from a young age. His courage to push boundaries, his unwillingness to compromise, his life-affirming, boisterous singing style, his exploding imagination and his poetic puns full of irony and wit, – all these are attributes in which she feels addressed, liberated and understood.

“Quand on n’a que l’amour” – When only love remains -, is a concert with the most beautiful and touching chansons by Jacques Brel.

Accompanied by 5 congenial musicians, Maria Bill interprets and relives the songs in the original language, partly also in Flemish, and combines them with entertaining translations and impressive stories from the exciting life of the headstrong poet – the doubter and restless spirit who found infinitely tender words for ageing and for the fragility of love. What the interpreter Bill always manages to do so sensitively is to convey emotions that carry the audience away and make people laugh and cry. With her own intensity, she sings songs like “Amsterdam”, “Ne me quitte pas” or “Madeleine”, sings of remembering, of desire, of reunion, of dreaming and losing oneself.

You can expect a breathtaking evening, carried by the overwhelming voice of Maria Bill, who already caused storms of enthusiasm as “Piaf” and hits exactly the right note again with her new, dense Brel programme.
