Ever wondered if it’s possible to find vegan food in Vienna? Well, you’re in luck all our plant-based eaters, because during the month of August, there’s an entire three-day event celebrating all things vegan, from food to animal cruelty-free beauty products! Gather with fellow like-minded souls and celebrate the sustainable, plant-based lifestyle (and admission is free)! Explore the world of plant-based cuisine, from delectable street food to the raw type, gluten-free specialties and dreamy desserts, as well as stalls selling sustainable clothes, cosmetics and wellness products. Furthermore, learn more about animal and environmental protection from NGOs, and live bands add all the ambiance. Veganmania will take place once again on Danube Island from 23–25 August.
Travel back in time at this charming folk fair, where Viennese culture, food and traditions are on full display. Neustifter Kirtag (in the wine-growing town, Neustift am Walde) is the place to be if you want to spend some time outdoors with your family and children while enjoying good food and the atmosphere of a traditional fair. The fair dates back to the mid-eighteenth century, when Neustift winemakers went to the Empress Maria Theresa with a harvest crown and requested tax exemption after poor yields put them in a difficult economic situation. So, every year in August, winemakers pass through Neustift and Salmannsdorf, stopping at the wine taverns. Visitors are entertained by numerous Kirtag stands, with stalls selling traditional festive food. Dressing up comes highly recommended, and there are all sorts of fun and games to join. Neustifter Fair takes place from 22–25 August.
Two days: over 15 international craft breweries showing off their most delicious malts, ales and other craft varieties, quench your thirst at this year’s Vienna Kraft Beer Festival — headed up inside the city’s foodmarket, Gleis//Garten. Not only limited to Viennese brewers, come and sample beers from Germany, Sweden, Hungary, Denmark and Spain, comparing which ones your tastebuds love the most. Mikkeller, First Brewing Co. and Ten Fifty are some examples. Running over two days (from 30–31 August), there’s also live music!
There’s just something about urban street art that’s so captivating (personally, we’re addicted to street art photography)! Running for its 10th edition this year, the Calle Libre Festival is one epic gathering of international and local artists, showcasing street art, graffiti and other creative avenues. There will be live painting stations, workshops (including both practical and theory), music, children’s entertainment and plenty of food. A highlight of this street art festival is an amazing sculpture park. It all goes down at Nordwestbahnhof from 31 August to 7 September.
Ready to show off your vintage wheels, or simply arrive for an automobile spectacle? For over 35 years, the Vienna Classic Days have been a beloved annual tradition, where spectators enjoy the look of beautifully restored vintage cars, including pre-wartime showoffs … all 200 of them. You’re so more than welcome to pull up in your own rarity, newer models included. This year’s lineup includes some old favourites, like the parade down Vienna’s Ringstrasse and the classic car picnic in Donaupark, as well as some new ideas and special programme items. The Vienna Classic Days will be held on 24–25 August!
WERK in Vienna is already celebrating its 18th anniversary! And you’re invited to a party on this special occasion! During the second weekend of August, from the 9th to the 11th, enjoy free admission to WERK’s terrace, where festivities, a flea market and other cool things await, like yoga and a Drink and Paint event! A small but fine open-air festival with fantastic acts and artists has been planned! For example, Venice Blue is playing Friday, with VEZZ3 on Saturday, and a whole bunch of DJs. After the concerts, the festival doesn’t end, carrying on into the night at a hotspot club on Friday and of course, Saturday.
Cinephiles, the dotdotdot Open Air Festival is back in Vienna! Yay! During the festival, drink in the fresh air and Vienna’s night sky while watching 120 short films from 40 different nations. Every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at twilight, there will be full-length open-air short film screenings and film conversations. A sure highlight! It all takes place at the Folklore Museum Vienna within indoor and outdoor venues throughout the week. The filmfest runs nearly for the entire month of August, from the 4th to the 29th.
Consider sitting outside on a sunny summer evening, surrounded by bars and art museums. This is exactly what the Framout Open Air Cinema has to offer. This location is specifically chosen in Vienna’s Museumsquartier (MQ). Its Baroqueness makes the most stunning setting, especially for this event. Fun is guaranteed with free entrance and a broad selection of films, with this year’s theme: “The Garden.” Most movies are broadcast in original English or with English subtitles to reflect Vienna’s cosmopolitan milieu. This year, the event runs every Friday and Saturday, until 31 August. Different films are screened weekly, so pick the one you like best or check out all of them every weekend!
Keen on adding to your vinyl collection? From 9th to 10th of August, a summer record exchange and music get-together (presented by Radio 88.6) will take place in Ottakring! Delight in sifting through hundreds of records (new and old, international and local), as well as a selection of posters and vintage hi-fis! Admission is free — bonus! The Vinyl & Music Summer Nights will be held in all weather conditions so don’t worry, and it all goes down from 9–10 August.
Talk about a jaw-dropping location! If you’re looking for a cool place to spend your evening in fab company, we have a tip for you! The Donaukanal’s Summerstage (resting on the water) has a number of open-air bars — many of which are accompanied by live music, outdoor art and other waterfront delights. Whether you are an art lover, a foodie, sports fan, culture vulture or lover of live concerts, discover something to your liking here. Check out their interesting programme for a variety of fun activities throughout the month of August, from readings to concerts (including Agnes Milewski, Cécile Nordegg and Sabine Stieger) to wine-tastings, exhibitions and games, like bowls and trampolines.
