The spring exhibition

Spring exhibition is always a pleasing experience for both mind and eyes. Let your artistic side soar high with Åmells and their delicate selection of the best spring themed artistry.

When Åmells welcomes the spring of 2023, the emphasis is on all the scents and colors of the bright season. Olle Hjortzberg sets the tone with his two brittle floral still lifes, where wild meadow flowers really pour out over the canvas and almost seem to want to break the frames of the paintings. A strong sense of summer, albeit of a more melancholy nature, also permeates Georg Pauli’s delicate painting Ångbåtsbryggan. There, as in Carl Larsson’s watercolor Aftonrodnad on the catalogue cover, it is the Nordic summer evening that frames the main motif and conveys the special mood that penetrates so deeply into many art-loving souls.

Appealing summer motifs naturally also attracted more modernist-minded artists. The Gothenburg colorists Ivan Ivarson and Inge Schiöler depicted summery impressions from Bornholm and Bohuslän, respectively, with highly intensified colors and delightfully flowing brushwork, while Ragnar Sandberg chose an unusually subdued color scheme for It’s blowing up. Three brilliant female modernists also get a well-deserved place in this year’s Spring Exhibition: Sigrid Hjertén is represented with two motifs from the south of France, Agnes Cleve with two very different compositions in oil, and Vera Nilsson with a wonderfully austere depiction of the small fishing community of Kyrkesund.

Some of the most historically significant works in this year’s Spring Exhibition are neither particularly large nor colorful, but deserve to be viewed and contemplated in detail. Anders Zorn’s Skarprättaren i Siebenbürgen is a veritable little masterpiece. Also of particular interest are Albert Edelfelt’s first known preliminary work for the important painting Christ and Magdalena and Carl Larsson’s Clothilde, which is the direct model for one of his permanent ceiling paintings in the Fürstenberg Gallery at the Gothenburg Museum of Art.
