St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican is the largest and most important church in Rome, often described as the largest church in the world. The construction of the current St. Peter’s Basilica was begun in 1506 under Pope Julius II and ended in 1626, during the pontificate of Pope Urban VIII. It is a reconstruction, given that on the same site, before today’s basilica, there was another dating back to the fourth century, built by the Roman emperor Constantine I on the area of the circus of Nero and of a contiguous necropolis where the tradition has it that St. Peter, the first of Jesus’ apostles, was buried after his crucifixion.
The beauty of the monuments and statues inside is unmatched all over the world; its dome is the symbol of the greatness of Rome. We will admire unique works such as Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s Baldacchino, the Statue of St. Peter by Arnolfo di Cambio and the Tombs of the Popes in the Pontifical Caves: 2 hours of wonder and amazement with open eyes!
This is the best historical moment to visit the most important and largest Basilica in the world without the usual crowd of mass tourism, to admire a truly unique place: the square and the basilica are deserted making this visit truly special and unrepeatable!
