From March 20 to March 30, 2025, Prague will host the eleventh edition of the theater and dance Bazaar Festival, which showcases progressive artists from Central and Eastern Europe and, since 2019, also from the Middle East.
This international showcase of innovative stage works aims to push the boundaries of theater and dance and open discussions on important social issues.
The festival responds to a growing community of audiences seeking pioneering forms of stage production and an open dialogue about the future of society. Its programming focuses on artists who maintain a critical distance from official culture, take risks, and reflect the current political situation in their countries. Many of these places face restrictions on freedom of expression and increasing pressure on independent creation.
Prague and the Czech Republic have long played a key role in supporting freedom of expression, and the Bazaar Festival builds on this tradition. By expanding its programming to include artists from the Middle East, it also helps break down prejudices and bring attention to experiences from a region still grappling with issues such as poverty, migration, dictatorship, and war conflicts.
The festival program includes performances, workshops, discussions, and residencies, providing artists with space to experiment and explore new approaches to creation. The selection process prioritizes authors who emphasize collective work, treat their colleagues with respect, and produce works of high artistic quality and courage.
A key aspect of the Bazaar Festival is also supporting new projects in their development phase. Artists can present excerpts from upcoming productions, receive feedback, and accelerate their creative process. The festival often brings back creators whose work was showcased in earlier stages in previous editions, allowing audiences to follow the artistic process through to the final performance.
Since its first edition in 2015, the Bazaar Festival has taken place on independent Prague stages such as Divadlo X10, ARCHA+, Studio ALTA, and Alfred ve dvoře. The eleventh edition once again promises bold programming, inspiring encounters, and artistic experiences that reflect contemporary society and push the boundaries of theater and dance.
