Eigasai Japanese Film Festival

Don’t miss the 17th Eigasai Japanese Film Festival, March 26-23, 2024 at Kino Lucerna! All film fans and fans of Japan will be in for a treat, as the festival will bring various workshops to learn more about this beautiful country.

This year, the festival will present 7 films whose heroes will be thrown into an established and functioning society and it will be up to each of them to face the challenge. Will they respect the rules of the community or will they go their own way? The films will introduce the milieu of the Japanese yakuza mafia, the world of professional shogi chess players, the disappearing world of old trading arcades, as well as crooks of all types and sizes. That is to say, such corners of Japanese society that remain, by definition, completely hidden even to the very inquisitive and astute tourist. And there are even mysterious ninjas!

As the festival director explains, visitors can expect a great experience because the films have been selected with the intention of introducing viewers to aspects of Japanese culture that they are unlikely to see even if they go to Japan themselves. Traditional Japanese culture consciously works with this concept to enhance the experience of those attending the screenings and, for example, the tea ceremony. Moreover, few Japanese people manage to travel completely around Japan. However, the film gives us the opportunity to move in space and time wherever we like. Hence the theme of this year’s Unseen Japan festival.

All films are in Japanese with simultaneous Czech and English subtitles.

Venue:Kino Lucerna, Vodičkova 704, 110 00 Prague 1
Date: 26 – 23 March 2024
Admission: ticket for each film is 139 CZK, for disabled and seniors 80 CZK.
