In June, the Prague Botanical Garden will once again transform into a space inspired by Japan. 🇯🇵 From June 5 to 14, the Prague Botanical Garden will host a festival of bonsai and Japanese culture, featuring a display of exceptional bonsai, demonstrations of traditional arts, workshops, guided tours, and a weekend festival program.
Come and admire a craft that is never “finished,” as it changes with the seasons and grows more beautiful with each passing year. Along with tree shaping and Japanese cultural traditions, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase bonsai and complementary plants and participate in various exhibitions and workshops.
This year’s event will also feature the prestigious International Bonsai Triennale, which takes place in the Czech Republic only once every three years.
What can you look forward to?
June 5–14 – Japanese Garden, daily 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
🪴 The Japanese Garden will feature more than 100 bonsai from the Prague Botanical Garden’s own collections as well as from leading growers in the Czech Republic and abroad.
🪴 There will also be a visitor contest, Miss Bonsai, as well as guided tours of the exhibition and displays.
June 5–7 – Exhibition Hall of the Ornamental Garden, daily 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
🪴 The exhibition will include the 12th edition of the Triennale, a prestigious international showcase that rotates between the Czech Republic, Germany, and Poland.
🪴 Only 15 trees may be entered from each country, and each grower may exhibit only one bonsai. These are therefore exceptional examples of the contemporary European bonsai scene.
🪴 The program will also include guided tours led by members of the Czech Bonsai Association.
June 12–14 | Exhibition Hall of the Ornamental Garden, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. daily
🪴 The next exhibition in the hall will showcase traditional arts associated with bonsai.
🪴 Suiseki are naturally shaped stones that may resemble distant mountains, islands, waterfalls, landscapes, or animals. This art form, dating back more than 2,000 years, originated in China and later developed in Japan.
🪴 Kusamono are arrangements of grasses and companion plants grown in pots. They often complement bonsai and express the mood of the season.
🪴 Bonsai pots are an integral part of bonsai presentation. Their history dates back to ancient China and is closely linked to the development of the art of growing miniature trees in containers.
June 6–7 and June 13–14 | Ornamental Garden, program from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
🪴 During the two festival weekends, the Ornamental Garden will come alive with a program inspired by Japanese culture.
🪴 You can look forward to a traditional tea ceremony, bonsai shaping demonstrations, guided tours of the exhibition, martial arts demonstrations, calligraphy, ikebana, workshops, a lecture, as well as plant sales and themed refreshments.
We look forward to welcoming all lovers of Japanese culture! 🇯🇵
