Doctor Strange traverses the mind-bending and many dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse with the help of both old and new mystical allies to confront a mysterious new adversary. In the Multiverse of Madness, one of the last adjectives that come to mind when describing Doctor Strange is madness. Even if one ignores the unfortunate release date, which sees Marvel follow up a genuinely imaginative, gonzo groundbreaking take on the concept (Everything Everywhere All at Once), there’s little here other than the expected outstanding visual effects.
While directing Benedict Cumberbatch’s surgeon-turned-practitioner-of-mystical-arts Stephen Strange through one eye-popping sequence after another (there’s even a grandiose cosmic battle against an enormous demon), director Sam Raimi is weighed down by an abundant supply of storytelling and lukewarm characterization.
