Akkordeon Festival Vienna

The 25th International Accordion Festival is the first of all accordion festivals that no longer takes place on Vienna’s many stages under the directorship of Friedl Preisl. This anniversary edition is also the first of all accordion festivals under the new overall management of Lisa Reimitz and Franziska Hatz and even though this new director duo is very familiar with music and festivals, including those of Friedl Preisl… this step, this transition, this decision is really not something that can be taken in passing.

We would therefore like to say a few personal words to you here before we hopefully have the opportunity to get to know each other personally during the festivals.

Well, since the beginning of 2022, we have been able to work together with Friedl on the handover of the Accordion Festival and the Musical Advent Calendar, and later also the KlezMORE Festival. Franziska Hatz is no stranger to many of you, having played a key role in shaping the accordion festival over the past decade – both as co-curator/organiser and as a musician on the city’s stages. Lisa Reimitz, on the other hand, had her first experience with “Friedl’s Streichen” in 2010 at the Musical Advent Calendar – back then with the Vienna Complaints Choir (and Franziska Hatz!) on stage. As our shared followership began to develop, we quickly realised that we agree on the biggest questions as well as the smallest details – even if we often come to the joint decisions through different approaches. This ranges from curating to the final number that ends up in an Excel list. To summarise, we can report on our two-year takeover process: We have studied, scrutinised and admired Friedl Preisl’s ingenious, charming, nonchalant, enriching, diverse and valuable work of the past 25 (!) years in detail before adopting it with some tricks and always full of respect for what has been created so far and are now trying to pass it on to you, dear audience, with our own handwriting.

In the form of three festivals, some of which have been reduced in length, but which will continue to shape the cultural scene in Vienna with their usual high quality!

For this anniversary edition, we have opted for an exciting mix of familiar and newly developed formats; for concert experiences with greats, insider tips, virtuosos, the tried and tested, surprises, the experimental; wild, quiet, loud, soft, gentle, powerful, international, national, local; in fantastic venues and with a lot of heart – for those unifying moments that only (live) music can create.
