Alchemical Laboratory in Art Exhibition

16.09.2021 - 06.02.2022

Have you ever been interested in alchemy? If you want to learn more about it, then this exhibition is for you. During the first half of the 17th century, the depiction of the alchemist in the laboratory became one of the frequent subjects of Dutch and Flemish genre painting. Some of these depictions were satirical, others showed the alchemist with a certain seriousness. It is important to compare various examples of these depictions in fine art and scientific works dealing with alchemy or metallurgy. While in the latter, art is a means of representing the subject of laboratory equipment, in works of genre painting the subject of laboratory equipment is a means of creating a picturesque work of art. Don’t miss out on these historic and informative paintings and come see them!

The exhibition is both in Czech and English and is freely accessible from the street Na Perštýně and Husova Street 24 hours a day.

The exhibition was prepared by Ivo Purš from the Institute of Art History of the CAS.
